One month until the European Accessibility Act

The European Accessibility Act is almost here – are you ready?

On the 28th of June 2025, the European Accessibility Act (EAA) will become effective. The act establishes common accessibility principles, not only for public sector websites like the Web Accessibility Directive from 2016, but also a wide range of private companies, including e-commerce platforms.

Let’s get technical

Under the EAA, the affected businesses must comply with EN 301 549, a harmonized European standard. The latest version, EN 301 549 V3.2.1, is primarily based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, and ensures that accessibility is standardized across the European Union.

Step-by-step: How to get started

Navigating the path to web accessibility can feel daunting but breaking it down into manageable steps makes the journey much more approachable. Here's a straightforward guide to help you kick-start your accessibility efforts:

  1. Educate yourself and your team

There is plenty of information available online, so start exploring! Familiarize your team with the WCAG guidelines and online resources.

  2. Assess your current situation

Use automated tools to perform an initial assessment of your website, but keep in mind that automated tests catch only about half of accessibility issues. Don't forget real user feedback for a complete view.

  3. Make a strategic plan

Now that you have identified your gaps, outline a roadmap for implementing approvements. Prioritize changes, delegate responsibilities and set realistic timelines.

  4. Involve all stakeholders

Accessibility is a team effort. Continue to educate your team and encourage collaboration between departments.

  5. Recognize accessibility as an ongoing process

Start making the necessary changes, keeping in mind that accessibility is an ongoing commitment.
